Breaking a leg in Mexico
A key component of lowering stress during international travel is to be prepared. Accidents happen no matter where you are, and constantly worrying about what might happen is not only a waste of time, it takes away from the fun of your vacation.
Well, count me as one who doesn't worry about too much when I'm south of the border (mind you, I'm not saying that's necessarily a good thing). So when I had an accident that required immediate orthopedic surgery, I had to make decisions as the situation was unfolding.
So before you travel:
Check with your health insurance provider to see what international coverage you may have, and what forms or procedures you need to know about
Collect any documents and phone numbers you may need to show health insurance coverage and get in contact with your provider, and
Consider purchasing international travel insurance, especially if you're going to be traveling internationally for an extended period of time.
And once you get to Sonora:
Consider getting a Mexican cell phone (read more about that here) for on-the-go communication and access to emergency services
Be careful if you go out at night, stay with others and be aware of your surroundings at all times, and
Don't drink too much.
That's what comes to mind as I'm writing this. I'll add more as they occur to me, also please contact me if you have any additional suggestions or questions.
So here's the cautionary tale of my accident while walking at night in Northern Sonora:
