Hermosillo

The central region of Sonora is dominated by the state capital of Hermosillo. This bustling metropolis of more that 700,000 residents is not only the center of state government activities, but is also a major cultural and business destination as well.

The central coastal region features Sonora’s main port city of Guaymas, in addition to seaside towns of Bahia San Carlos and Kino Bay.

Ures

The city of Ures, Sonora was founded as a mission in 1644 by Jesuit Missionary Francisco Paris, who christened it as San Miguel de Ures. It has been the state capital of Sonora three times.

Located near the foothills and mountains of the Sierra Madre Oeste (Western Sierra Madre), it is the southernmost city of the Route of the Rio Sonora. Ures is near the Sonora River basin, which is fed from waters of the Rio Sonora, other rivers and runoff from washes.

There are several interesting places to visit in Ures, to include: Plaza Zaragoza; San Miguel Archangel Cathedral; The palacio municipal; The house of General Pesqueira; and the Museo Regional y Casa de la Cultura de Ures. Read more about Ures.

Rio Sonora

Another great place to visit in Central Sonora is the tourism corridor along the highway that passes through the lovely and historic pueblos along the Sonora river.
