Rock-Art Petroglyphs near Caborca, Sonora, Mexico
The area around Caborca has an abundant amount of petroglyphs, fascinating artistic symbols carved into the rock by Hohokam and Anazazi Indians that lived in the region from 600 B.C. to 1400 A.D.
One of the sites with the greatest concentrations of petroglyphs is Rancho Puerto Blanco, with more than 6,000 of the etchings on the hills of the sprawling desert ranch, in particular the hills of La Proveedora and San José. In fact, the ranch has the greatest concentration of petroglyphs in Latin America.
The owners of the ranch, the Mendez family, are careful stewards of these ancient treasures. They offer visitors a variety of activities, from visits to the petroglyphs to observing daily ranch activities and enjoying a traditional Mexican ranch meal.
In addition, visitors can hike, ride mountain bikes, camp in the desert or park their rig at the RV camping area near the front gate, on the highway from Caborca to Rocky Point.
